A New Beginning: Documentary Newborn Photography
There are some photo sessions that feel less like sessions and more like being invited into someone's life.
I recently photographed my girlfriend's brother, his wife, and their newborn son at home. Since this was my girlfriend's family, the photographs were especially personal. I wasn't simply photographing a newborn—I was photographing the beginning of a new chapter for people I care about.
They weren’t really expecting a family shoot, so rather than turning the afternoon into a traditional newborn portrait session, I wanted to let things happen naturally.
Photographing a Newborn Honestly
Newborn photography often brings to mind carefully posed photographs, elaborate setups, and perfectly arranged scenes.
I was never really interested in that type of newborn photography.
I prefer photographing newborns as they actually are—especially during a period of life that can feel both beautiful and completely exhausting.
There is something meaningful about photographing a new parent holding their child in the same room where they will spend countless ordinary days together. The imperfect moments are often the ones that become more meaningful with time.
A newborn doesn't need to be posed into a particular expression for the photograph to matter.
Sometimes they're sleeping.
Sometimes they're crying.
Sometimes they're being passed from one parent to the other.
Sometimes everyone is simply sitting together.
Those moments are the story.
The Beginning of a Family's Story
The photographs from this session aren't meant to show what having a newborn is supposed to look like. They're meant to remember what it looked like for them.
The people.
The home.
The exhaustion.
The excitement.
The tiny details.
And the feeling of meeting someone who has only just arrived.
That's what I love about documentary family photography. Years from now, the photographs won't just show what their son looked like as a newborn. They'll bring them back to this particular moment in their lives—to the room, the light, the way they held him, and the people they were when their family was just beginning to change.
These are the kinds of photographs that become more valuable with time.
