Celebrating Two Years | A Documentary Family Session for Twin Sisters in Charlotte, NC
There's something especially meaningful about photographing families as they move through different seasons of life. Children grow so quickly that even a few months can feel like a completely new chapter, which is why I always encourage families to document the ordinary moments just as much as the milestones.
This session was a celebration of two very special little girls—their second birthday.
Rather than rushing straight into posed portraits, we began where they were most comfortable: at home. The girls spent the first part of the session playing together, exploring their favorite spaces, and simply being themselves while their parents joined in. Home has a way of putting children at ease, and those familiar surroundings often create some of the most genuine photographs.
One of the things I love most about documentary family photography is that children don't have to perform. There are no expectations for perfect smiles or sitting still. At two years old, curiosity leads the way, and that's exactly what makes this age so much fun to photograph.
After spending time inside, we crossed the street to a neighborhood playground where the girls could do what toddlers do best—play.

They climbed, explored, laughed, and bounced from one adventure to the next with the kind of energy only two-year-olds seem to have. Watching them interact with each other was a reminder of the unique bond twins share. Sometimes they played side by side, sometimes they wandered off on their own little adventures, but they always seemed to find their way back together.
Those are the moments I find myself drawn to as a photographer—not perfectly posed portraits, but real interactions. A quick glance between sisters. Tiny hands reaching for balance. Parents cheering from the sidelines as another milestone is conquered.
These are the photographs that become more valuable with time.
Years from now, their parents may not remember every detail of this birthday season, but they'll remember how little the girls were. They'll remember the playground across the street, the endless curiosity, the laughter, and the joy of watching two personalities begin to emerge.
That's the beauty of documentary family photography.
It's about preserving childhood exactly as it feels—not perfectly curated, but wonderfully real.
